If everything seems to be going well, you have obviously overlooked something.

Not at all. I suppose this will solve some problems with identification of our cars.

I am trying to come to terms with the number of modifications to these vehicles - I have one to mend for a friend.

It is a Mk 1 MPV - one of the last of the 1998 to 2002 range , made in May 2002.

The engine is a DW8 (not sure if it's DW8B) and the gearbox is a BE3 type 20TE24. The main issues are the clutch/gearbox - clutch is stiff, linkage worn, sometimes jumps out of gear, is it possible to fit a later BE4 gearbox as a direct replacement? Are the driveshafts the same, the flywheel the same, etc?

Or would it be better to stick with the BE3? Thank you!

May be wrong, but...
1999 was the first year with coloured plastic on the wing mirrors.
Also, I believe that was the year they introduced the 'secret' storage compartments in the floor in front of the rear seats.
(Secret because I know of at least one Berlingo owner who had no clue that they were there... )
