Just unscrew/unbolt and unpop. This gave full access to the broken bracket at the top of the cowling. A simple metal strap was cut/drilled and bent to shape and screwed/bolted to the existing screw and bolt holes in the cowling and the cowling securing point so no additional drilling required in to the cowling itself. The result is a very secure cowling which doesnt rattle anymore - YEEHAAAAAA:colors:
Thanks for all your help people - much appreciated
Thanks. Mine has just snapped (about 28,000 miles) but is not rattling yet. I was warned about it as the only fault a joiner friend had found on his. He got a preplacement, but I like your version.

yes it's really done the trick - problem totally cured for just pennies Glad to hear there arent other common faults on these 1.6 HDi s - and along with the considerably cheaper road tax compared to the 2.0 HDi that I had before...I'm liking this car more and more every day!!!

Just paid £115.00 for the year for the 1.6 HDi - I guess its emissions based - performance wise theres really very little noticeable between the two engines - I suspect the 2.0 HDi might be the choice if youre doing alot of towing while the 1.6HDi is a bit more nippy in general.
My tin cowling has snapped in the same place as mrgreencar. I was going to fix it myself today but an initial check tells me that I don't have a suitable torx tool (T-27?) to remove one of the bolts holding the plastic pipe to the radiator. The plastic pipe is in the way. Would be grateful if someone could tell me the best torx tool to get into this tight space.

Many thanks
You don't remove that!!!! You undo the ten or 8mm on the opposite side of the flange and the pipe turns thru 25-30 degrees and that torx you identified is left in the turbo (not the radiator) and the pipe can be pulled out...
The pipe/tube is kinda twisted towards you and upwards, then it comes free from the little stud
