[Engine] 1999 DW8 - How do I loosen the aux belt tensioner?

I'm cheating a little as I have a DW8 Dispatch, but I know a lot of Berlingos came with this engine.

I tried changing my aux belt a while ago but couldn't figure out the tensioner at all. I had to throw in the towel, but now I need to change my PAS pump so it's becoming relevant again.

On my previous vehicles it's been easy - my Peugeot 106 had a couple of bolts underneath, and my 806 had a self adjusting one.

This one I just can't figure out at all.

Here's my belt and pulleys. Bottom is obviously the crank shaft, the top one just in view is PAS, the one to the right is the alternator. I don't have A/C.

Here's a diagram I found online (mine looks identical to the top middle one. This one seems to indicate that the top roller is the tensioner:

How the hell do I get the thing off?

You haven't got an automatic adjuster ,like the last diagram.

"Here's a diagram I found online (mine looks identical to the top middle one. This one seems to indicate that the top roller is the tensioner"  = yes


The roller bearing you are pointing to is part of the adjuster, the smaller roller bearing above it is the other part .
Slacken off the hex bolt between them  and with the nut on the  rod (no8 ) which should adjust it.
Its just out of view in your picture so if its not there someone has made up a non adjustable tensioner

Yes , that should do the trick .
my last comment about the non-adjustable bit is because it seems to me the belt in your picture is almost touching where it shouldn't, Or its the angle of the photo !

No it was almost touching, did make me wonder why. I've had the belt replaced by a garage since that photo so hopefully they're a bit further apart now!

Thanks for clarifying, I'll see how things go tomorrow.

Is there no primary adjustment on the alternator swivel ?
So where does this bit go then ?

Possible that they were almost touching as a slightly longer belt was fitted and the adjustment was at the end of its travel.

I think the correct size belt is 1388 mm (6PK1388)

So even with brodfather11's spot on instructions I still coudn't find the adjuster! I was mistakenly looking between the timing belt cover and PAS pump. Had to go to a garage to ask where it was, which he showed me for the price of a coffee.

For anyone else struggling like I did:

First slacken the tensioner using a 10mm allen key just above the tensioner

Then turn the nut just in front of the fuel pump anitclockwise:

Seems obvious now!

Oh and yea, looks like my old belt was too long at 1438mm. The new 1390mm one leaves plenty of room between the pullleys.

Good to hear you have it sorted out.

You can often get away with fitting a belt 10mm or so longer if for some reason you can't get your hands on the correct size, but whoever fitted your belt was pushing the limits with one that long.

Hi you are my last hope ha. I have the same problem but cant seem to undo the bolt in the picture
