DIY Tinting - post fit, thoughts?
#11
I find the factory tinting level is a bit too dark on my '14 Berlingo. I guess it's for having that "ananymous cargo" factor it essentially being a van with additional seats fitted, LOL. Wish I could lighten them a bit up, but looks like not worth the hassle reading the info here.

Better to be darker. My factory tint is soooo light. It looks like a popemobile!

How much of a pig to do?

And any secrets to getting the rear right?

watched the pro tint fitter and he over cut the tint buy around an inch laid it on the outside of the window and used a heat gun to get a rough shape of the window. then fitted it to the inside and using the heat gun again got it to the shape of the glass. it looked like a work up. think i would have messed up quite a few times if i was to try it. (i think you need to be inside as well cos any slight breez and its all over.)

Do they do the rear window vertically from the inside or from the outside

Alternately I would not imagine a horizontal fit to be even doable.

Tonight's update.

Between a cat on my head, and a small little chainsaw in bed next to me, I was out of bed by 05.15 and surfing the web with a mug of tea by 05.30

Then ironed 13 shirts while trying to keep quiet so the chainsaw could rest and hit peak revs all at the same time.

By 10.00 it was brekkie time, giant crumpets with apricot jam and a good mug of tea.

Followed by cleaning with thinners, and priming the wheels I blasted yesterday.

Next up the glass came out of the Berlingo.

All needs washing, cleaning and drying.

Fortunately Katy was here to supervise, I nearly messed up twice, cutting wrong and facing the film the wrong way.

Than lay out the tinting film, cut to size and fit.

Squeegeed out the water used to float the film.

Contrast.

Interestingly, once fitted to the van, you can see out very well, but trying to see in is a lot more difficult

Once we refitted the glass, I was pretty pleased to say the least, as this was another one of those things I thought was worth trying.

Then up to the farm for a couple of pics to show the result of our work.

After this we came home and I thought it was a perfect time to complete painting the wheels.

I am really pleased with the outcome of this all, good prep, priming and a decent result.

Tonight Katy and I are taking it easy and she is still, cooking dinner....... lucky me.

And of course tonight I probably deserved my Rum and Pepsi Max.

Tomorrow.....?

Who knows.

I bought some ready made for Berlingo / Partner pre cut ones as per http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/161129144986?_...EBIDX%3AIT

I am tempted to do the side ones myself, after reading Grizz's post, but not sure about the rear, there is a guy fairly local to me that does tinting, I might let him do the rear screen.

Grizz, do you have any further tips on doing the side ones, and did you do the back one too?
Regards to all,

Hi John

Only did sides. The film was just too short with trimming included to make it for the rear.
If I were a pro, I may have manged to grt enough material to do the rear.

If you were closer I would happily give you my extra which would mean you had enough to do the rear, even if you destroyed it.

I think it will be difficult as there is a curve on two planes. Both vertical and horizontal.

My advice is. Clean clean clean and use cloth thT does not leave even a spot of fluff.

I also covered my squeegee in cloth so as not to mark the film.

Other than that, spray surfaces wet, use loads of paper towel to collect excess water when you squeegee.

My job was not perfect but I am happy with it.

I did mine, sides were fairly straightforward, 2 goes at back window using heatgun method. Turned out fine

I tried tinting my rear windows. Got the sides done but not 100% as a few bubbles supposed to go after a bit. Week later look ok back glass got ripped off not impressed as when taking film off the tint the static draws it together and that's when creases start happening even got the mrs to help me made it a bit easier. Try sides see how you get on. I have left rear window coz I thought it was too dark anyhow. Not a job I would want to do again
