It is a massive pain. I once bought an ex-disabled registered car and had to go to the local DVLA office to get the classification changed. You can't re-tax it without this. I also wasn't told by the selling dealer so was really pissed off about the whole thing.
As far as getting in trouble goes, if the road tax hasn't run out, it's got MOT and insurance then you should be fine (at least as far as ANPR checks go) but the hassle is when you need to renew the tax.
