I have the feeling that my cap acts exactly the same way as you describe above.
In your place, my next action would be checking the bag/pump, and maybe test the fuel filler cap with a different cap (maybe borrow one from someone you know?). The pump is known to act up every now and then...I have no idea how to test the pump...I think diagbox does it...
When my PUG partner tepee did 175000 km (more or less the 110k miles you have?) it also started giving the alarm for filter plugging, although everything was in place and working. So besides resetting the EOLYS tank level (that I filled up myself), I also told the BSI that It had a new DPF installed. During winter time, It gave me the warning more often, but then I just ran it on the motorway full throttle for 20 minutes (Its Germany, no speed limits) when the alarm was on, and then the message went away. This was more pronounced during winter time, now in the warmer weather I have had no more messages. The Van and original DPF are now 185k km and going...
