Brake master cylinder problems!! HELP!!!
#21
Was it the correct grade of brake fluid? Most cars use DOT 4 fluid, the Berlingo included. However, Citroen used to use a special mineral fluid on a lot of their cars and it was often labelled as "Por Citroen/for Citroen" on the bottle and I wonder if the wrong stuff was used? From memory the seals get wrecked if the wrong fluid is used.

Thanks for that mate. I was using the "correct" citroen mineral fluid ( the green stuff) but I've heard from another source as well that this ruins the seals on berlingos so I've now flushed it all out and replaced it with dot 5 racing fluid. Hopefully my braking woes are over now! Thanks again. Mark

That's not the correct fluid for a Berlingo. Berlingos use standard dot4 brake fluid.

The Green stuff is for use ONLY in Xantias, XM, BX, CX and the old DS and 2CVs with disc brakes.

Do not use it in any other Citroen !!

Thanks again mate. I thought dot5 was just better than dot4. It's now been flushed out yet again and filled with dot4! It's getting expensive now in fluid!! Lol!

I don't know what was the problem but the most likely cause seems to have been the fact that I was using the 'correct' Citroen mineral green fluid. Just to recap though I've replaced the master cylinder and servo, all 4 flexible hoses(2 front 2 rear), every copper pipe, rear shoes and wheel cylinders, front pads and callipers and flushed new fluid completely through the system ( dot5 at first and now the recommended dot4!) it's cost me more than the van originally did!! I've been trying to upload some pics but can't seem to do it!!! Oh and while it was in bits I've put new track rod ends on, new bottom ball joints, bottom arm bushes and put a nice set of 17 inch Wolfrace alloys on it!!
