Take the EGR valve off for your template and whilst it's off give it a good clean up.

You could try disonnecting it first to se if that makes any difference. Pull the actuating hose off, or unplug the solenoid (under the battery - blue plug). Bear in mind that either blanking it, removing it, or disconnecting it is likely to give MIL and long term probably limp mode every now and again. But might help eliminate.

Also, the wastegate has nothing to do with the EGR.

Yes you're absolutely right. You can blank off the EGR but not the wastegate. At least for an experiment to eliminate possible causes.

in that case check all of the boost pipe work or make up an improvised leak tester with a foot pump and a plumbing cap / tyre valve that fits in the maf pipe end, secure with a jubilee or tie-wrap and pump it up to about 15psi and see if it leaks down. It should hold solid - spray fairy liquid mix to find where the leak is if it leaks off. Bubbles will ensue!

Also Put a cloth over the tailpipe hole to hear any blowing in the exhaust (should go silent)

my old van had a bad back box which caused a similar problem you could drop the box off and give it a run see if it responds better

try the solonoid valve beside the battery it has 2 vacuum pipes to it and an electrical connection.if you join the 2 pipes together and rev you can hear the egr valve if it does work.then its the solonoid not expensive....it worked for me. 2.0hdi
