Me and my partner have recently split up and the car was registered and insured in her name as it was cheaper.
i am 27 and she was 25 with 6 years no claims fully comp and protected we were paying about £1000 give or take a few pounds.

at the moment it is insured till march so we have arranged to keep the car as it is and i get my own insurance in march when it due, anyway i been getting some quotes lately for myself and because i only been a named driver for past 5 years i have lost my no claims i oreviously had from back then.

This means i am having to start from scratch and have been quoted between £2300 to £2500

Its only a 2004 2.0hdi multispace i could understand if it was a big 4.2 jag lol

Shop around, you should not loose your no claims, provided you have proof of it as a named driver. if you were with directline they would mirror NCB. If your ex doesn't need it she could sighn it over to you and you then continue with the same policy. need to ask company and also shop around. happy xmas

I have trawled the net on comparison sites and cant get it much cheaper than £2000 but when interest goes on for paying monthly it bumps it up, i have contacted current insurer and they have quoted me £2349 thats with interest on and they told me it was 4 years and you lose your no claims discount if not been used for some time.

I also contacted Swinton who was the last broker i dealt with 5 years ago and they confirmed this as well, i think its unfair but there not much i can do about it apart from stump up the cash.

I am also a bus driver and have been for 7 years never had a bump got a clean licence and when i phoned one insurance company they told me it is dearer for professional drivers as you are driving more so at higher risk of having an accident, i dont see what this got to do with it but they quoted me about 3k i think it was

340.00 fully comp with additional premiums for alloys, tinted windows, bull bar etc, 12k a year. and foreign cover. but I`m also an old fart.[60] includes partner on it.
I would always inform insurance of any mods as after my bump dec 2010, the repair company informed the insurance that I had alloys and bull bar on and repair was put on hold for 3 weeks whilst insurance company verified I had informed them [I had hire car so didnt rush them, but did bollock them for delay]
Always tell them, or they may not pay up, and my little bump happened so quick and near home, but was towed away very quickly before you realise [after shock]

Well i just been playing on comparison sites to try and get it cheaper than £2300 and i tried it without the towbar and tinted windows as modifications and just put standard car. to my amazement the quote now is £1494 with churchill , so they charging me an extra £800 ish for these mods i think its ridiculous.

Interesting you mention tints. I was thinking of doing this myself as I intend to use the car for camping, but thought it might be a red rag to the insurers. I had a similar experience a few years back with wheels - aftermarket alloys shot the price up, but a swap to OEM wheels from a different model (same size as it happens...) didn't.

I suspect that certain modifications put you in a stereotypical group which affects risk profile. I wonder what would happen if I fitted Viper stripes...

I dont pay more for my tints, [25% tint] as they are rear of driver /passenger, but inform them incase of bump as costs could be higher. it is bull bar and alloys which nock it up. Any excuse, but make sure you have your facts on bull bars, they must be new european compliant ones.
At 25% you cant see in unless a light is on or its sunny the other side of car [if you know what I mean] we have camped in back of ours no problems, people are shocked when you get out in the morning. we use a little pop up tent by side of car with our gear in.

It turns out that the tints bump it up about £750 while the towbar adds about £50.

Think i will end up taking them off with the difference being so high and i dont fancy insuring it without notifying them as it will void insurance in event of a claim i believe.

yes it will, but those tints must be high concentrate, and are they from behind passenger/driver?

My tints are exactly same as yours 25% but don't forget they are already tinted as standard to around 30% so effectively they are 55% like yours will be, the windows tinted are the rear ones and tailgate (the same as yours) as this is only legally the ones you can tint to block more than 30% of light.

Either way whether they are light or dark tints the insurance company hasn't given me options like that , it is just a check box for tinted windows, I reckon my age doesn't help either and don't see why tints should put it up at all as I see it as a kind of security feature not being able to see in much and my main reason for having them is to keep it cool and block sun out from my sons eyes when he is in back.
