Berlingo faults.
#1
Hi guys, I'm new to the forum so please bare with me. I have a 2001 berlingo 1.9d van. Basic as it comes.

It has a starting problem.

It will crank over but won't start unless the primer is pumped.

Then when it does run, you turn on the headlights and it will cut out. I've heard suggestions of an Alternator problem.
It's got a 50Ah battery? I personally don't think it's got the nads to do much. Don't know if that's got to do with most of the starting problems?

Also the horn and brake lights don't work. Just trying to get a good idea of where to start.

If there is a air/fuel leak between the injection pump and the fuel primer the fuel will run back to the tank unless the engine is running. The fuel filter assy is a good place to look . If you have the rubber bulb on the top of the engine by pumping it if there is a leak it wiil show. If you have the primer pump beside the fuel filter then the primer itself is a good suspect for leaking air into the fuel lines.
The horn problems have been well documented , a search on this forum will help .

You can check the alternator output when running with a multimeter, it should read approx. 14.4 volts.

Brake light problem could be either the switch on the pedal  or a fuse or bulbs out.

Check the filter lid. They have been known to crack & let air in.

Hi Pipereed welcome to the forum your horn issue is probably the earth on the steering wheel under the airbag. Its a crap earthing design done for quickness to put together but not last. Ive had to do both of my berlingos to sort it. There is a thread on here with pictures to show you how to do it have a search. Here you go http://www.berlingoforum.co.uk/thread-36...l#pid26651 have a look at post 12. Thanks to Geoff for the post.

Also look at the starter it may be past it's best there is a more power full one you can get from ebay that will turn it over faster also check the valve clearance they do tend to close up around 100,000 miles .

Right, the battery isn't the best. So I'll buy a new 75ah battery. I found the issue with the rear lights. The clusters are knackered. But the switch was hanging out and it looks like the retaining clip is bust. Are the clips available?

I've got a diesel specialist looking at the starting issue tomorrow.

I'll keep you all informed..

Hope I'm not too late but buy the biggest battery that'll fit.
