Yesterday I learned that removing the headliner of m M49 with ragtop sunroof isn't all that difficult at all.
sure, there's a fair few screws and plugs, and you need to remove first the visirs, then the overhead tray, which can be a little bit fiddly. Then you remove the cover on one A-pillar, the cover on the B-pillar on the same side(you'll need to remove the upper mount for the seatbelt for this one - I suggest doing it on the driver's side - the screw at the bottom of it, and pull it carefully upwards. On models with sunroof, you remove the rubber around the opening. Unless you have covers on the C and D-pillars, all you need to do then is to 'release' it from the assorted door and windowseals and give that side a gentle tug. It'll pop out of the top of the pillar covers and seals on the other side and can be removed out the back without issues.
The reason I released it on the driver's side is that on the passenger side there's a certain sliding door and the upper rail is kind of in the way.
When removing all the handles, brackets and whatnot, I suggest using tape to secure the screws to the parts so that you later know where they belong.
There may be a defect in the sunroof mechanism on mine.
When the roof is slightly open, I can see the 'screw wire' on both sides, but one end goes back with the roof(driver's side) and the other side's end disappears forward when i open the roof further.
Either there's something broken there, or the roof is only pulled from one side, and that's even more screwy.
Unfortunately, this looks like a big and difficult repair and since i won't be able to do it in the garage right now(it's pretty full... ) I have to postpone it.
When I get the chance to work on it properly, I will make a separate thread, possibly even a FAQ about it.
Final tip is that the bottom of the sunroof is held on with velcro at the front and hooks and fabric loops further back. Underneath the fabric is what looks like a serial number and production date.
( M49 / xxxxx date ) Mine is in the 7000 range, and was made in October 98.
(forgot to note down the exact numbers, writing from memory)
