First car was a yr old low mileage Cortina 1600 crossflow. 2yrs ran it up to over 100k miles. I changed the oil/filter/points every 6wks, new plugs every 12, fan belt after 24k miles all quick diy jobs, brake pads regularly & clutch cables sometimes broke, you carried a spare & replacement was diy 15mins so not much revenue lost on a busy night.
Clutch(garage job 1.5hrs), waterpump, starter alternator were all replaced at least once & probably front wheel bearings, all easy cheap diy.
After this I bought a brand new 'tina, '76 for about £2k. 1.6ohc Pinto engine by then. Cambelt failure was a problem on these engines & replacement every 30k miles was sensible & about 2hrs diy, but if failure did occur, head removal & valve replacement took a fraction of the time it would have on a modern engine.
I cabbed the car for about 2.5yrs with 6wk oil changes & cambelt changes as stated & only replaced the normal service items mentioned above. After that I went truck driving & kept the car another 5 yrs with low annual mileage, after that I got rid as an mot failure with rotten sills/wings & rot everywhere else. Rust killed Cortinas not mechanical failures.
I can only assume that todays cab drivers must earn well to do repairs at todays costs. Its ironic that the rust that killed 70s cars has been replaced by the mechanical complexity that makes older cars today as unviable to repair as similar age cars did due to body rot in the 70s.

Many Taxi drivers unfortunately have to spend time without turning a wheel waiting for work.

Still low mileage though, I worked in Colchester in the 70s, 10hr shifts 6days a wk. fairly large town & trips into local countryside, one or 2 long trips a wk like Heathrow/Gatwick airports & averaged 1000miles/wk.

When I first started taxi driving 9 years ago I was doing 47k a year, its over the last few years its getting more difficult to earn money taxi driving. The companys are taking more and more drivers on and the local councils are giving licences away like sweeties.
I DO MISS MY BERLINGO
