1.9d rattle , Power steering
#1
My 1.9d has a rattle / metal knocking sound which I think is the drive belt area lower down. If I put a bit of steering on or hold it in full lock the noise disappeares so I'm guessing I need to be investigating the pulleys and power steering pump?

Any advice appreciated

Danny i think there is an idler which will tension both the PS pump and alternator . When the bearing in this wears it produces a fair bit of a rattle . easy way is to take aux drive belt off and spin/rock the pulley as wear shows up by grumble/rocking. Run the engine without the belt and if noise disappears it narrows the source down. Not expensive and straightforward to replace.

Well noise goes off when you remove the belt or load up the power steering . Booked it in for cambelt and pump doing with local garage who is going to look at the rattle too as all the pulleys etc felt / looked ok
