Timing Belt CamBelt

Hi All

Had a good look for cambelt / timing belt posts and those that exists are quite old so hence the post.....

Just trying to gauge the temperature and recent experience from the forum for the "safe" period for the timing belt interval. Recognise the PSA advice is 10 year or 100k miles

Asking the question as I have 2010 Partner Teepe (B9) 1.6 Diesel with only 35k miles so wondering if this should be replaced this year or next

PS what's the average price for the job (including tensioner, idler & water pump) that forum members who have done the the job in the recent months

I concur on the 100K miles or 10 years recommendation.

I had my B9 cambelt replaced recently at 96K and coming up to nine years old. The belt was still looking in good condition, despite the garage mechanic thinking that it was the original.
In addition to the tensioner, idler and water pump, the main oil seal was also replaced as there was a slight weeping. £350 all in, which was a good price. (other quotes obtained). Done a couple of 1000 mile trips since, no problems.

There is a video on youtube on what to look for as regards wear on the belt in assessing whether to replace.

If it's any help. Mine is HDI 1.6L. 2010. I naively took the service book (140K 10 years) as a good guide so I was quite happy till the belt failed at 108K.

Eight months on, an engine rebuild behind me and over £2500 worse off, I'm probably about to get rid of the vehicle for pennies due in part to ongoing issues related to the rebuild and not wanting to throw any more good money after bad.

Service interval for a £600+ job is a serious consideration when buying used. I won't ever again buy a 80K miles used car without adding on the price for an immediate cambelt change, - whatever service mileage the manufacturer claims.

In future, (hoping it doesn't occur ever again), cambelt fails, I'd scrap the vehicle.

one issue not to be overlooked is that your car could have been clocked.
We see this a lot, this obviously puts you in a danger area due to the unknown extra miles.
Please don’t think that because you have all the cars history that it couldn’t happen, take it from me that it does.
Anyway, the old 16 valve engine belt is good for 140 k or 10 years, not sure I ever saw one break early.
However we used to change them at anything over 100k
The newer 8 valve engine needs the belt much sooner, I would say about 80k max , just to be on the safe side.
It’s due to the extra loading on the belt from only having 8 valves to do the same job.
A 16 valve or 8 valve are roughly the same cost of £265 + vat, this includes a new water pump.

That's a real good price for a belt change. Does that include new tensioner and idler? How about the auxiliary belt?

It will be a timing belt kit with tensioner and idler knowing lighty but maybe not an alt belt atvthat money, but it would only be the cost of a belt as you’d have to whip it of to do the belt anyway, so maybe add 20 quid for a decent belt

That’s correct aux belt is extra , but only about £20
