[Engine] FRIGHTENING NOISES

Hello Chaps,

I am a courier by trade, & my usual evening run involves 20 drops with an average 40 miles travel. a nice little number, but all good things come to an end.
I'm now doing a run averaging 120 miles, all was good until last monday, when exiting the A2 & onto Gravel Hill my van made the most terrible noise ever, - like a 'pinking' sound but ten times louder, like the valve clearances had been set at an inch, there was hardly any power & I just had to pull into the next side road & turn ignition off.
I'm now thinking 'oh please dont die on me, I've got no money to buy anything, I pulled the bonnet & everything looked ok, no belts hanging out - no oil leaks, I'm checking all the engine hoses & injector wirings for tightness, all seems ok, I waited a couple of minutes then tried starting it up again, which it did straight away & was fine for the rest of my drive home.

Next morning I looked at everything I thought may be causing the problem, the only thing I found was the battery terminals were quite dirty, so I thoroughly cleaned them. The van has been running absolutely beautiful since, could it of been the battery connections at fault ? maybe causing a problem with the fuel pump?
The engine is a 1.9 DW series Diesel.

Odd one that when i first started to read your post i thought cam belt but as i read on it cant be. If its running right now i doubt its anything mechanical, also there isnt that much to go wrong on the 1.9d so it really is an odd one.

You could get a diag done but i doubt it will tell you anything useful on the 1.9d. All i can say is keep using it and monitor things.

Hi Polar, thanks for your reply,
I thought the same - oh no not the cambelt, but I replaced that last year, very strange, it made such a row like all the valves were jumping, & now completely normal again, fingers crossed it doesn't happen again.

Try draining the fuel filter of water - memory tells me there is a take off point for this but can't remember more sorry.

My 02 1.9D does something like this about every 4-5 weeks! Loses lots of power, sounds like there's some form of blow-back in the exhaust system..semi-blowing noise..So I limp home, and park up.
 Next morning she fires up and runs perfect..No, I am unable help diagnose the fault for you, but you're not
  alone on this one.
 (When I changed the glow-plugs this spring time, and dismantled various bits on top of engine to get at them..the egr valve [I think that's what it was?] was absolutely clogged with carbon-smeg! and had to be poked out..
   ...this MAY be because of this fault, and MAY be worth just taking a peek..?)

6 months I had the same noise 10miles after I put some supermarket fuel in , stopped beside the road and had a  look, shut the bonnet and drove home and never had any bother with it again ! . Think the engine was feeling neglected.  
Possible water in the fuel springs to mind or petrol contamination. I kept the fuel receipt just in case.

yeah, definitely worth a look at the valve, I've heard lots of horror stories relating to these,
fingers crossed it's been fine since, always in the back of my mind though, hopefully you have cured your problem.

Now, that's interesting, because that day I had actually got fuel from a different garage !
