[Brakes] quotation
#11
All of this reminds me of some experiences I've garnered from having dealings with the motor trade as a paying customer, a few detailed below.

Bought a brand new motorcycle and after PDI and using it on the road I found a hole in the frame where one of the engine mounting bolts was missing.

After the above experience I put the bike in for first service, I marked position of oil plug and other items to check whether work had been done ...... Inspection afterwards proved nothing done apart from washing the bike, no oil and filter change, no tappet check adjust or any other works undertaken !  A complaint by me brought an apology plus £200 compo and a lifetime supply of service items for the bike.

How about the engine drain plug not tightened up after an oil change and the subsequent oil slick - the new engine and compo came to a few bob I can tell you.

One main dealer after changing a driveshaft gaiter left out the bottom suspension joint ( wishbone ) securing bolt with catastrophic results ensuing. .... This was very expensive for the main dealer after threats of publicity and a civil case.

My wifes car was main dealer cossetted from new prior to our ownership so it was purchased in good faith with a full service history and many assurances from the dealer.
After a few months I decided to service it prior to the MOT, crikey the state on the bloody thing was alarming with works previously charged for clearly not having been done. My mate running the garage I use for MOT's told me it was unsafe from day of purchase and to take it back.
Again threats of publicity and a civil case brought about a resolution in my favour.

Just a few examples of poor service from people who were supposedly professionally trained and deemed competent to work in a safe and satisfactory fashion.

By the way the Main Dealer that left out the wishbone bolt tried to blame it on their apprentice and told me he would be sacked, this didn't go down well with me so when I explained their co-responsibility and liability for works done and the apprentices opportunity for litigation they backed down.

Yes indeed competent workers !!!

edit to above :

Oh and not forgetting a braking issue at a garage - my son's car, poor braking and car pulling to one side.

Garage fitted new discs and refitted the odly shaped worn pads
Son complained to me so I had a look, one of the calipers had seized no less.
An angry visit to the garage brought about a refund and I did the work afterwards.

An update.
Job was an utter disaster.

Id set aside a clear uninterrupted weekend with reasonable weather.
Including clearing up, cleaning down, mandatory tea and bacon butty followed by a gentle road test,it took three point seven five hours.

My biggest failing was the self congratulatory comments to the other half afterwards.
She seemed stangely delighted.
So here I am now getting beaten up by visiting grandchildren for the entire  remainder of my weekend.

My advice to anyone else contemplating it is to just get on with it.
Youll see some comments on here from someone scared of their own shadow- ignore .
A haynes manual is of some use but it makes the job sound more complex than it is , the photos are appalling and it doesnt specify what type of fasteners are used(actually three different types).

Once these are bedded in I may look at doing the back ones.
It is on my to do list.
But not right at the top

The back ones will probably take a bit longer as you may need to wind the pistons back in. Others will have a view on that part.

I had to wind the front ones in a bit to get the caliper over the lip that the old pads had worn.
And then fully back to accommodate the thickness of all the new parts.
G clamp made that easy.
Winding back with the bleed nipple also expells residual  fluid that normal bleeding cant flush.
Look at me- such a seasoned professional...... Huh
It is on my to do list.
