[Transmission] Growling transmission ?
#1
Growling noise, particularly on smooth roads. which continues when engine de clutched or coasting .Both wheel bearings changed and new drive shafts fitted.
Is this a gearbox problem ...like the differential ?Noise seems to decrease on left hand bends hence wheel bearing change. 150000 miles on the clock and gearbox seems fine.

Got the same problem with a Mk1 2.0 Hdi Berlingo. It seems to weep gearbox oil from the driveshaft seals, so I am going to replace them & then drain & re-fill gearbox.

Did you replace both wheel bearings? both my M49 had wheel bearing trouble around the 89000 mark and on both the failing bearing was the one on side that was unloaded in the bend IE nearside on a L/H bend.
Also on my 2.0hdi I replaced both bearings with items from euro car parts and a year later they started to make the same noise I replsced them with unipart items (SKF bearings) touch wood every thing is fine, when the old bearings where removed (euro car parts) it looked like the hardening treatment on the inner races was pitting. I have had the bottom pulley problems (damper rubber breaking up) and I thought I had a bearing going when it first started (the sound appeared to alter on bends as well) but it develops quickly into a sound like a black cab then very expensive/terminal sounds, but a replacement was about £50.00
