rear bumper protector.
#11
I fitted an ABS plastic bumper protector to my 09 reg. vtr , bit expensive but hope it does the job in saving the rear bumper getting scraped. My Berlingo is iron grey and the protector is silver ,thought it would look better than a black version .

Any pics? How much did it cost?

If everything seems to be going well, you have obviously overlooked something.

Think you have grasped the wrong end of the thread here matey.

We are talking about an ABS stick-down protector to save the rear plastic bumpers, which are now normally self coloured, from getting scratched when getting stuff in and out of the load compartment/boot. Available in black or chrome ABS sheet and affixed by means of double sided tape.

On modern vehicles, bumper bars are now designed to collapse progressively in the event of a collision to minimise impact and whiplash.

Add ons such as fancy chrome bull bars and the like are now often illegal in fitment and will invalidate your insurance.

The idea of fitting a towbar to protect the rear of the vehicle seems a good idea in principle, in practice a rear end shunt would result in the vehicle with the towbar being catapulted forward with consequential occurences.

Not putting a downer on proceedings just pointing out a few popular misconceptions and potential law-breaking areas.

Not only that, but the forces from the impact are transferred from the bumper and associated crumple zones to the structure - used to be the chassis. A possible consequence of this is a written off vehicle due to structural damage, instead of replacing some bodywork.

Very true, can't argue with that......

Just been looking in the Haynes Workshop Manual For Body Repairs.....

Typical, under bodywork repairs, no details of repairs to spinal injuries and whiplash are given. These would be the possible outcome of a shunt prior to the innovation of the "crumple zone".

I would rather walk away from a written off motor vehicle in an accident than spend a considerable period of my life strapped to a spinal-injuries-board.

Heres' mine.

Excellent fit, bought from this ebay seller cost £50 including postage. Expensive & I suspect most are bought to cover up existing damage. I managed to drop a folding bike as I lifted it out of the back causing a nasty gash on top of the bumper that was never going to be invisibly repaired. This covers damage up completely & looks factory fitted so happy enough.

Fitting was simple, obviously cleaning is everything. A cleaning cloth is provided & also a tube of primer that is wiped over the area the tape will stick. The tape is pre fixed to underside of cover & after cleaning & removal of plastic bumper bolts, offer up cover & push in place. fit is perfect.
