Spare tyre theft

Dear friends
I'm brand new to the forum and thought I'd add a couple of my own experiences whilst enjoying reading all the useful posts.
I had my spare wheel & tyre stolen and believe it was gone some time before I noticed as the cradle was still in place so I could have been stuck if I'd had a puncture.
I believe the thief deflated the tyre (possibly just cut the valve off) until it was slim enough to be loose in the cradle. I managed to replace it via an online breaker (hope not repurchasing my own!) and since then I have stowed it valve upwards in the cradle to deter access.
Anyone else had this happen?

Never underestimate a thief they're not as stupid as they look just a shame they didn't use that bit of brains to do something more constructive!

As previously mentioned, my spare has a nice little cover and lives inside where it's warm, dry and secure. :woop:

If the vertical bolt securing the cradle is properly screwed down then it should reach a point where it actually tightens down locking onto the cradle and cannot be removed without first unscrewing. Thinking logically, if it didn't and with no wheel present the cradle would bounce up and down and eventually dislodge itself from the hook assembly...

I remember seeing an article on a consumer rights program (watchdog??) where thieves targeted a vauxhall 4x4 model
The cars in question had a full set of alloys,including the spare.
The spare had no form of security whatsover so in a larger city a bit of recce and and hour of your time would net a full set of often unused wheels and tyres that could be sold for good money.

I use a padlock and chain looped through the wheel, carrier and chassis.

Not foolproof (but then nothing is given sufficient time determination and resources) but enough to deter the casual thief

Apparently a pair of bolt cutters make short work of the cradle.

That is it in a nutshell-theres nothing you can do to stop them -all you can do is make any attempt as noisy and time consming as possible

BTW - I've aquired a good selection of spare wheels if anyone's interested?
If I havent got it in stock I can probably get one tonight.:wave:
