More problems
#1
Let me start at the beginning. I have a 2002 1.9lt D

Car died a few weeks ago, RAC man came out and found a broken pipe
SEE HERE
Click link above to see my previous thread on that.

Replaced EGR Unit

and it is no diferent. When i start the engine it coughs and sputters, when i rev the engine i get loads of smoke from the exhaust.

Does anyone have any ideas on what it could be?

Obviously trying to do this on the cheap to avoid garage costs.

Many thanks in advance for your help.

Hi Luke, sorry to hear you are still having problems.

First thoughts are:
1, make sure the glow plug light on dash goes out before cranking engine
2, do you know when glow plugs were last replaced?
3, removal and refitting of egr could have disturbed the fuel lines. Try priming the fuel system using the manual pump at the fuel filter housing ( is a long black push button ) press until you feel resistance then five more times after starting engine.

Let us know how you get on..... will be a process of elimination me thinks Smile

Thanks for geting back to me Adam. So im not sure when the glow plugs were replaced but my dad who has been trying to figure this out with me says they are okay. He has a very basic knowlege of engines. I tried priming the fuel system like you said but it didnt make much difference. When i start the car itw is still sputtering, when i rev the engine it slowly builds and i get white smoke from the exhaust then when i remove my foot fron the pedal the engine stalls.

If the engine runs ok at idle, and stalls with release of gas pedal I think you may have an air leak in fuel system somewhere.

Will need to check security of all fuel lines and the seating of the fuel filter housing. You can also drain the fuel filter housing of any water that may be present. Will post a pic up......

Do you have clear fuel lines at all, look for air bubbles present when vehicle idles

Luke,

would like to refer you to the following website: http://www.uniteddiesel.co.uk/diesel-engine-smoke.php
is a list of possible faults and diagnosis possibilities.
think it may be a case of trial and error on this one mate.

Have no connection with the site but has helped me when headscratching once or twiceSmile
