Lol! 87,000 miles, a bit scruffy but reliable. Even has a CD player and AC!

Spinx, don't be confused. People talk about "long" and "short" wheelbases for the Berlingo, but the L1 and the L2 Berlingo both have exactly the SAME wheelbase length, the L2 has a 20cm longer body (i.e slightly longer bumper overhang behind the rear axle).

Thanks for the info CourierJim, good to know!!

I guess the main thing I need to know at this point (may drop Arnie Clark a line) ... is whether the "bulkhead" on their white van hire is "solid" or one of those bars behind the driver's seat (or even a mesh canvas?).

Kind Regards,

Growler73,

We would be doing a lot of travelling around the UK, so luggage (and possible sleeping space) is our key priority, not to mention reliability!

I tend to agree with V6BOY above that, if you both intend sleeping in it, then go for a slightly larger van (Short Wheelbase (SWB)) like a Vivaro, Despatch, or Ford Transit Custom. Otherwise, I think you will need to pitch a tent each night!

Have you tried contacting companies that hire Campers out? (VW transporter type) Seems like a little extra comfort would be a price worth paying over the length of time your planning to stay here

Yes indeed Hughzie, we checked various Camper Hire companies throughout the UK (even the back garage and retro outfits), but the quotes in all cases were far more costly than Arnold Clark's modest Group A van. The most important fact being that we are coughing up the expenses in Canadian dollar, so keeping costs down is the primary objective, even if we have to do without that extra comfort.

doofer, don't be fooled by my profile location field, as I am Scottish, so very familiar with all our major hotel chains. Having spent nights in both Travelodge and Premier Inns, I have no complaints on both counts.

As far as vehicle/accommodations, we will now be looking at tent pitches/glamping and wild camping. Scotland has looser rules than England as far as wild camping is concerned, so sleeping in the van would only now occur if we were absolutely "stuck" ... and so long as we are distant from main roads, check local land ownership (farm land etc) ... leave the area as we found it, then there are no issues on that front.

Kind Regards,
Spinx

Would love to see the officers face when he tries the back doors while investigating the parked vehicle on a quiet back road and you two are in the back complete with bed!!!

Look up bumble campers. They hire out or sell converted Toyota Previa's for camping in. They might be a cheaper option on a six week hire
