Gearbox blew up on the van yesterday, barely made it home with one gear left and the worst noises coming from it i have ever heard from a car!
I need to know which gearboxes are compatible with my berlingo, its a 2006 1.6HDI.
How can i know which gearbox i am buying it the correct type, loads on ebay just need some info on them for the 1.6.
Hope you can help

Can work it out from the last eight digits of your VIN.

The gearbox will have etched on the ID pad (normally on the front side) DP37, or DP3G. You need a replacement box with either of these codes on it, or DPC7.
Matching these codes will guarantee the correct ratios as original.

I am struggling to find any boxes with those codes local to me, am I right in saying then that all the berlingo boxes will fit that generation of car just the ratios will be different?

If it gets desperate, yes, just make sure the clutch fitment is the same style/position and it's from a 1.6 diesel.
To be honest, I don't know how many of the pikey type breakers even know where to look for the code.

Keep scouting around, don't overlook Gumtree or the people breaking a similar age 1.6HDi van.

Ok brill, well the next thing is to get my gearbox off. Taken gearboxes off a few cars over the years but do you have any pointers on removal? Any guides anywhere?

There's nothing sneaky about them, you should replace the driveshaft oil seals when installing and consider a new release bearing for the clutch.
