[Engine] 1.9 D hard to start and runs poorly

Last week my 2004 1.9 Diesel started to “beep” and light the engine warning light every fifth minute when driving. When the days went by it also started to be gradually harder to start every morning. I had a suspicion that it might was the glow plugs or glow relay that was defective. Therefore I tested to restart the engine when it was hot (90,00C), but still, very hard to start. Yesterday it also started to run very poorly and noise...sounding like a gasoline car running on 3 cylinders…Any idea what the reason can be. I have read some threads about a so called “Advanced solenoid” mounted on the diesel pump. Could this be the problem? I have ordered a diagnostic tool to read out the fault code, but this has not arrived yet… Suggestions are appreciated.

I have looked at the diesel filter insert and it was very clean. I will also try to replace it when a can get the hold on a new one. But I don’t believe that should cause the engine warning light to go on??? Maybe somebody here knows?
