Berlingo Oil changes

Thanks

I'm always hesitant to discuss oil, 50 people always jump in knowing better.

However, I also have an '08 (which is pre dpf) and the recommendation 'at that time' was for basic 10-40 semi synth with a lighter 5-30 as an alternative economy oil. I ran the 10-40 for the first 4 years without any problems. I then changed to the fully synth 5-30 as the official advice changed following dpf and turbo problems. I do find the lighter oil makes the engine much noisier without any noticible change in fuel consumption.

I certainly agree that a fully synth is a better oil, although as long as the oil and filter are changed regularly (I do mine every 7000 miles as that is what I do in a year), I suspect the earlier 1.6 will be quite happy.

Thanks guys , mine is a pre dpf engine, apart from the trip across Europe it will mostly be used within a 10 mile radius of base, I think we will be doing under 10 000 miles a year so will be changing the oil and filter once a year.
In another thread Lighty said he uses triple q from eurocarparts which appears to offer citroen specs with a decent price, so I'm considering using that but am open to all ideas , is the oil type less critical on pre dpf engines ? I'm not overly worried by price more concerned about using the right grade / spec.

I just saw a sticker under the bonnet which says total activia quartz but does not give grade !

Oil used in dpf engines needs to be low saps(ie low in sulphated ash, phosphorus and sulphur)this is to enhance the life of the dpf. Current Cit spec oil is Total Quartz ineo ecs 5w-30 which is low saps & fully synth & should be used in engines with dpf. Previous Cit spec oil was Total Quartz 9000 which was not low saps but fully synth. Previous to that Cit spec was Total Quartz 7000 which is semi synth.

Probably best plan for all 1.6 hdi is to use Quartz ineo ecs or equivalent spec good brand oil & one cannot really do more than that. If you visit website of any oil brand they have oil selector page you can input your car reg number & it will come up with correct grade of their oil for your car.

That's the problem, they offer both 5/30 and 5/40, they both can't right can they ?

5/30 is the Cit specified grade for 1.6hdi. Other suitable oils are Castrol Magnatec 5w-30 C2 & Mobil 1 ESP Formula 5w-30
